AAUW Mission Statement

The purpose of AAUW is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research.

In principle and in practice, AAUW values and seeks a diverse membership.  There shall be no barrier to full participation in this organization based on gender, race, creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin, or disability. 

National:  AAUW was founded in 1881 with 65 members and now has more than 100,000 members and more than 1,000 branches and 500 college/university AAUW Membership:  The founders of AAUW, a few women who had the privilege of a college education in the 1880’s, wanted to use their education to extend the opportunity for higher education to other women.  They believed that education is the key to achieving equity for all women.

For 139 years, AAUW members have examined and taken positions on the fundamental issues of the day—education, social, economic and political.  Our commitment to our mission is reflected in all aspects of our work.

State:  AAUW has twelve (12) branches throughout the state with more than 1,000 members.  Branches are:  Aurora, Boulder, Colorado Springs, Douglas County, Durango, Fort Collins, Grand Junction, Gunnison, Lakewood, Littleton South Metro, Longmont and Loveland.

Local:  The Branch is a local unit of AAUW.  Branches promote the Mission of AAUW in all 50 states.  Our branch is the Fort Collins Branch.  Each branch member is also a member of the State and National AAUW.
